New Delhi: In a significant development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of retired IAS officer Amit Khare (IAS: 1985, Jharkhand cadre) as Secretary to the Vice-President of India. The appointment, effective from the date of assumption of charge, is for a contract period of three years in the rank and pay of Secretary.
Distinguished Career of Amit Khare
IAS Khare, a seasoned bureaucrat with over three decades of experience, is currently serving as an Advisor to the Prime Minister since October 12, 2021, handling crucial social sector portfolios. Throughout his illustrious career, Khare has held several pivotal positions both in the Central and State governments, contributing significantly to policy reforms and governance.
At the Centre, Khare served as Joint Secretary, Higher Education (2008–2014), where he played a key role in international collaborations including UNESCO, and worked on education policy and copyright reforms.
In Jharkhand, his home cadre, he was Secretary of Human Resource Development, Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University, and later served as Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary (Finance-cum-Planning). During this period, he introduced important reforms in budgeting, financial inclusion, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and scheme implementation.
Key Roles in Government of India
Mr Khare joined the Government of India as Secretary, Information and Broadcasting in May 2018 and later held the posts of Secretary, School Education & Literacy and Secretary, Higher Education. He was a core member of the team responsible for formulating and implementing the landmark National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a major overhaul of India’s education system.
Academic Credentials
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, IAS Khare also holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.
The appointment of IAS Khare as Secretary to the Vice-President marks a new chapter in his distinguished administrative career. The role is critical in supporting the functioning of the Vice-President’s office, which also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament).
