Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has appointed Mr. Ashish Chatterjee, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, as the Government Director on its Board with immediate effect, until further orders.

Mr. Chatterjee is a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. A graduate in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, he brings over 25 years of administrative experience in both state and central government roles.
In Tamil Nadu, he has served as the District Collector of Viluppuram, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur, where he played a key role in implementing governance and development projects. He has also contributed significantly to urban development while serving in the Corporation of Chennai.
At the central level, Mr. Chatterjee has held several high-profile positions. As Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, he was actively involved in policy formulation and regulatory oversight. He has also served as a Government Nominee Director on the boards of major PSUs including GAIL (India) Ltd., IOCL, and EIL, where he participated in strategic decision-making processes.
Since April 2025, Mr. Chatterjee has been serving as the Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, overseeing fiscal management and policy matters in the steel sector. His appointment to the SAIL Board is expected to further strengthen governance and strategic planning within the public sector steel giant.
