Dehradun: A fiery Facebook post by Uttarakhand’s flamboyant 2009-batch IAS officer, Mr Dheeraj Singh Garbyal, has ignited a major storm within the state bureaucracy and beyond. Though the post was later deleted, its contents went viral across social media platforms, triggering intense debates in bureaucratic circles and raising eyebrows at the highest levels of government.
Garbyal, currently posted as a Secretary in the state government, sharply criticized an unnamed YouTuber from Kumaon and a person from Garhwal – referred to in his post as “Shakuni Pandey.”
His controversial post read – “Hey Kumaon YouTuber, forgot to add anything other than Khadi Bazar! Add it after watching the video. Neither you nor your Garhwali partner Shakuni Pandey will understand what is the preservation of culture and architecture! Both of you keep making videos and holding press conferences together!”
The blunt tone and cryptic references in the post quickly sparked widespread speculation. While some officers labeled it a “Mahavishwat” (a major slip-up), others began digging to identify the people referenced. From government WhatsApp groups to meeting rooms and tea stalls, one question dominated the conversation: Who exactly are the Kumaon YouTuber and Shakuni Pandey?
Within minutes, the post reached the Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister’s Office, compounding the tension. No official statement has yet been made by the state government, and Mr. Garbyal himself has not issued any public clarification, further fueling curiosity and concern.
Although the post was deleted soon after it began trending, the damage had been done. Social media and local media outlets lit up with discussions, memes, and sharp commentary – making the incident one of the most talked-about bureaucratic controversies in recent memory.
As of now, the situation remains tense within the Uttarakhand bureaucracy. With public and media pressure mounting, all eyes are on the state leadership to see whether any formal action or clarification will follow.
Background
Mr Garbyal, known for his outspoken nature and innovative approach to governance, has been a prominent figure in Uttarakhand’s administrative circles. However, this latest incident may cast a shadow over his otherwise impactful service record – at least in the immediate future.
