Chandigarh: As nationwide outrage grows over the tragic suicide of 2001 batch senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, officers’ associations – both IAS and IPS – have come out in strong support of the late officer and his family, calling for a transparent and impartial investigation into the serious allegations mentioned in his suicide note.
Haryana IAS Officers’ Association Issues Formal Resolution
In a rare show of solidarity, the Haryana IAS Officers’ Association passed a formal resolution expressing deep sorrow over the death of 2001-batch officer Y. Puran Kumar. In the resolution, the Association:
- Paid tribute to Kumar’s integrity and commitment to public service.
- Expressed full support to his wife, 2001 batch IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, during this period of “immense grief and personal loss”.
- Urged the Haryana Government and Chandigarh Administration to address Amneet Kumar’s representations dated October 8 and 9, highlighting serious allegations of harassment and systemic bias.
- Stressed that the FIR No. 319/2025, registered under Section 308(3) of the BNS, 2023 in Rohtak, must be thoroughly and impartially investigated to determine the truth behind the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.
- Requested the government to extend full legal, institutional, and emotional support to Amneet Kumar and her family.
“We stand in solidarity with her and her family in this period of profound hardship and sorrow,” the Association noted.
IPS Association Expresses Condolences, Calls for Support
The IPS Association, the national body representing Indian Police Service officers, also issued a public statement on social media –
“The IPS Association expresses its heartfelt condolences on the untimely demise of Shri Y. Puran Kumar, IPS. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. We stand firmly with the bereaved family and extend full support in this hour of grief.”
Though the IPS Association did not directly mention the allegations raised in Kumar’s suicide note, the show of support from both premier civil service bodies reflects growing pressure on the government to address the issue transparently.
Allegations Against Top Officers, Including DGP
Puran Kumar, a senior officer from the 2001 batch, reportedly detailed in his suicide note instances of systemic harassment and caste-based discrimination. His note allegedly names multiple IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, and outlines a pattern of mental and professional harassment that he claims ultimately led him to take the extreme step.
Nationwide Protests and Political Response
The death has triggered widespread protests, including a Mahapanchayat in Chandigarh and candlelight marches across Punjab. Public sentiment has been further stirred by the release of a disturbing photo of Kumar’s body from the scene, raising questions about the circumstances and administrative accountability.
Demands for Justice Intensify
With pressure mounting from civil society, political leaders, and now officer associations, the Haryana government faces urgent demands to remove officers named in the FIR and initiate swift and fair disciplinary action.
