Lalit Kumar Beniwal, a Village Development Officer and a resident of Neem Ka Thana district in Rajasthan, recently committed suicide. He was also preparing for UPSC and was a brilliant student who attended IIT and aspired to become an IAS officer.
He leaves behind his daily wage labourer parents and three sisters. The entire family depended financially on him as the father is unwell and the mother finds only occasional work. His mother Aachi Devi thought that her son was studying when she looked into his room at 4 am when, in fact, he was writing his suicide note, it seems. When she looked again at 5 am, she found her only son hanging from the ceiling fan.
In the suicide note, many serious allegations of corruption and intimidation have been mentioned against a Sarpanch, a former sarpanch, and a clerk. Lalit had filed an FIR just a few days before his death mentioning that the local fund audit department had discovered that Rs 5.2 lakh was siphoned off in 2022 from the funds allocated for the gram panchayat development. The FIR was registered under sections of cheating and criminal breach of trust by a public servant under the Indian Penal Code. According to his family members, ever since Lalit lodged the FIR, the Sarpanch, former Sarpanch and others started threatening him. Due to this, he was under a lot of stress and anxiety had gone into depression.
Police found a 9-page suicide note from the spot. After the incident, the family members filed an FIR against the names mentioned in the suicide note. A case has been registered and investigation is going on.
