New Delhi: In a key administrative reshuffle, IAS officer Pavan Kumar Malapati (2012 batch, Karnataka cadre) has been appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The appointment, made under the Central Staffing Scheme, will be for a tenure of four years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), in an official order dated June 9, confirmed the appointment, stating that it has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Currently Deputy Commissioner of Ballari, Karnataka
Prior to this posting, Malapati was serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Ballari, Karnataka. The DoPT has directed the Chief Secretary of Karnataka to relieve him of his current charge immediately, instructing him to report to his new assignment in New Delhi without delay.
As per ACC guidelines, IAS officers appointed under the Central Staffing Scheme must join their new posts within three weeks of the appointment order. Failure to comply may result in debarment from future postings under the scheme.
Premature Repatriation of IFS Officer Kamlesh Chaturvedi from MoRTH
In a separate order dated June 6, the DoPT also approved the premature repatriation of Kamlesh Chaturvedi (IFS:1988:MP), Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), to his parent cadre in Madhya Pradesh, citing personal grounds.
Chaturvedi, who had been on central deputation since May 2017, was originally appointed for five years, with successive extensions granted in 2022, 2024, and most recently up to his superannuation in July 2025. However, his tenure now ends two months early following his voluntary request for repatriation.
