Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand: A delegation of 2025 batch Trainee IAS officers recently visited the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant, one of India’s leading integrated steel production facilities, for a comprehensive educational and training experience.
The visit, held on Thursday, aimed to provide these young civil service officers with direct exposure to the steel manufacturing process, technological systems, and corporate management frameworks central to India’s industrial sector.
Details of IAS trainees SAIL Bokaro Steel Plant Visit
The day-long programme began with an interactive session at the Human Resource Knowledge and Development Centre, where plant officials delivered detailed presentations on Bokaro’s production processes.
Trainees were briefed not only on operational workflows but also on initiatives related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), sustainability, and environmental protection measures undertaken by the plant.
Following the classroom segment, trainees visited the model room inside the steel complex. Here, industry experts explained the plant’s full layout, including the sequence of stages in steel production — from raw material intake to finished steel output.
On-Ground Tour Through Critical Plant Units
In the afternoon, the IAS trainees embarked on an extensive guided tour through key operational units:
Coke Ovens: Where coal is transformed into coke — a vital fuel and reducing agent in steelmaking.
Hot Strip Mill: Responsible for shaping steel into hot rolled coils and sheets.
CRM-3 (Cold Rolling Mill-Three): A precision unit for refining steel’s surface quality and mechanical properties.
Throughout these on-site stops, the trainees observed each phase of the steel value chain up close, gaining practical insight into industrial metallurgy, process automation, energy consumption, and safety protocols critical to large-scale manufacturing.
