New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the appointment of Rachita Bhandari (IFS: 2005) as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Malta. She is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, and is expected to assume the assignment shortly, according to an official MEA statement.
This appointment underscores India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Malta, which has a growing Indian diaspora of approximately 18,000 people, contributing across sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, IT, and construction.

India and Malta share friendly and cordial diplomatic relations. India was among the first countries to recognize Malta’s independence in 1964, establishing formal diplomatic ties in 1965. The High Commission of India in Malta was reopened in January 2017, with the resident High Commissioner taking charge in January 2018. Malta’s High Commission in New Delhi was opened in July 2007, supplemented by Honorary Consuls in Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai.

- International Day of Yoga: Regularly celebrated in Malta.
- Indian Film Festival (2024): Held in Valletta (16–17 March) and Gozo (11–14 April).
Several Indian community associations operate in Malta, including the Malta Malayalee Association, Malta Tamil Association, Bengali Association Malta, Gujarati Association, and Navodaya Sanatan Group.
