New Delhi: The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, witnessed a moment of pride, tradition, and national honour as a grand Passing Out Parade (POP) was held to mark the commissioning of nearly 500 young officers into the Indian Army.
Against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas and under the watchful eyes of senior military leaders, proud families, and instructors, the cadets marched for the final time as trainees, stepping into their new roles as commissioned officers ready to serve the nation.
The ceremonial event reaffirmed the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to discipline, leadership, and service to the country, while symbolising the transition of young cadets into professional soldiers entrusted with the nation’s security.
Background of IMA Passing Out Parade
Established in 1932, the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun has been the cradle of leadership for the Indian Army. Over the decades, IMA has produced thousands of officers who have gone on to serve with distinction in wars, peacekeeping missions, and humanitarian operations across the globe.
The academy is known not only for its rigorous military training but also for instilling values such as honour, integrity, courage, and selfless service. The Passing Out Parade is one of IMA’s most revered traditions, marking the culmination of intense physical, mental, and moral training.

The latest Passing Out Parade was conducted with full ceremonial grandeur on the historic Chetwode Drill Square. The parade showcased flawless drill movements, immaculate uniforms, and synchronised marching — a reflection of the discipline ingrained during months of demanding training.
A total of around 491–500 cadets, including those from allied foreign nations undergoing training at IMA, successfully completed their course and were commissioned as officers of the Indian Army.
The parade was reviewed by the Indian army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi who inspected the contingents and addressed the newly commissioned officers, emphasising their responsibility towards the nation and the values of the armed forces.

IMA Passing Out Parade: Oath of Service and Commitment to the Nation
One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony was when the cadets took the oath of allegiance, pledging to uphold the Constitution of India and serve the country with honour, courage, and dignity — even at the cost of their lives.
As the academy’s famous motto, “Veerta Aur Vivek” (Valour and Wisdom), echoed across the parade ground, the officers symbolically transitioned from trainees to leaders entrusted with commanding soldiers in challenging operational environments.
Training Excellence and Professional Readiness
The officers commissioned from IMA undergo comprehensive training that includes:
- Tactical and operational military skills
- Leadership and command responsibilities
- Physical endurance and combat preparedness
- Ethical decision-making and military values
- Exposure to modern warfare techniques
This holistic approach ensures that the newly commissioned officers are prepared to lead troops in diverse terrains and operational scenarios, from high-altitude borders to counter-insurgency and disaster-relief missions.
