Independence Day: BSNL Soft-Launches eSIM Services in Tamil Nadu, Pan-India Rollout Planned

State-Owned Telecom Giant Steps Into Next-Gen Connectivity on Independence Day 2025
Indian Masterminds Stories

Chennai: In a significant step toward modernizing its mobile service offerings, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has soft-launched eSIM services in the Tamil Nadu Circle, with a full pan-India rollout to follow in the coming months. The launch coincides with Independence Day 2025, underlining BSNL’s commitment to a digitally empowered India.

With this move, BSNL joins the ranks of global telecom operators offering embedded SIM (eSIM) capabilities—eliminating the need for a physical SIM card and enabling instant activation on compatible smartphones and wearables.

“A Leap Towards Secure and Future-Ready Connectivity”

Announcing the launch, A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, stated:

The eSIM launch underscores BSNL’s commitment to secure, future-ready connectivity and a truly Digital India. Customers will enjoy instant, SIM-less activation, dual-SIM flexibility, and improved security over traditional SIM cards. We will soon introduce additional security layers for enhanced protection.”

The initiative is part of BSNL’s broader digital transformation strategy as it prepares to expand its 4G and 5G services across the country.

Customer Experience and Benefits

During the soft launch phase in Tamil Nadu, BSNL subscribers can visit nearest BSNL Customer Service Centres (CSCs) to initiate the eSIM activation process. Both new and existing users can take advantage of this service.

Key Benefits of BSNL eSIM:

  • No Physical SIM Needed: eSIMs are activated remotely via a secure QR code.
  • Instant Activation: Faster onboarding through digital KYC at BSNL CSCs.
  • Dual-SIM Flexibility: Use eSIM alongside a physical SIM on supported devices.
  • Enhanced Security: Harder to damage, misplace, or clone than traditional SIM cards.

Device Compatibility: Works with recent models from major brands, including Apple, Samsung, Google, and wearables like smartwatches.

How to Get BSNL eSIM in Tamil Nadu

To activate your BSNL eSIM, follow these simple steps:

  • Visit the nearest BSNL CSC with an eSIM-supported device and valid government-issued ID.
  • Complete the digital KYC process with BSNL staff.
  • Receive a one-time QR code from the CSC.
  • Scan the QR code on your device to download and install the BSNL eSIM profile.

Note: Keep Wi-Fi or mobile data turned on during activation and never share your QR code with anyone, as it is unique and one-time use only.

Toward a Digital Bharat

The introduction of eSIMs is expected to improve customer experience significantly while also reducing the need for plastic SIM cards—supporting environmental sustainability goals.

This soft launch positions BSNL to compete more effectively in the evolving telecom landscape and meet the increasing demand for seamless, secure, and flexible connectivity.

With a nationwide rollout planned, BSNL aims to make eSIMs accessible to users across India, enhancing digital inclusion and enabling the shift to smart, efficient telecom solutions.
