New Delhi: India’s digital ambitions are rising far beyond 5G, with the government now targeting leadership in 6G technology and satellite communications (Satcom). Speaking at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia outlined the country’s roadmap for becoming a global digital powerhouse.
India: From Service Provider to Product Nation
Scindia highlighted that India has shifted its position in the global tech ecosystem — no longer just a service provider, but a product nation.
This transformation is largely driven by government initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
“The Prime Minister’s resolve with the PLI scheme has resulted in ₹91,000 crore worth of new production, ₹18,000 crore in exports, and the creation of 30,000 jobs,” Scindia revealed.
India Targets 10% of Global 6G Patents
Highlighting India’s transformation from a technology adopter to a global leader, Scindia said the country is actively working toward securing 10 percent of all 6G patents.
The Bharat 6G Alliance, a key initiative in this direction, is already aligning with global standard-setting bodies.
“India is no longer just following global tech trends. Today, we are setting them,” Scindia said.
Satellite Communications Market to Triple by 2033
Scindia emphasized the exponential growth of the satellite communications sector, which currently stands at $4 billion and is expected to triple to $15 billion by 2033.
He noted that Satcom is expanding beyond land-based services to deliver connectivity from land to sea to space.
“Satellite communications today are expanding horizons. At the heart of this revolution are our people”, he said.”
India as the World’s Digital Workforce
The minister underscored the importance of human capital, asserting that India is set to become the world’s largest digitally skilled workforce.
“The day is not far off when the world will say it depends on India,” he declared.
Innovation, Scale, and Self-Reliance at Core of Vision
Calling on industry leaders, Scindia urged stakeholders to contribute to India’s tech journey.
“Design here, solve here, scale for everywhere. India innovates, and the world transforms,” he said.
