New Delhi: In a major stride under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has successfully conducted its first-ever auction for Green Ammonia procurement. The auction, held under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme – Mode-2A, recorded a breakthrough price of ₹55.75 per kilogram.
This marks a significant fall from the ₹100.28/kg price discovered in the 2024 H2Global auction, reflecting growing maturity and competitiveness in India’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
Massive Procurement for Fertiliser Sector
The auction covers the supply of 75,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of Green Ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited, Odisha. It is the first in a planned series of 13 auctions, part of a larger tender to procure 7.24 lakh MTPA of Green Ammonia across the country.
The discovered price, equivalent to around USD 641 per metric tonne, now undercuts the global Grey Ammonia price of USD 515/MT as of March 2025, offering a highly competitive 10-year fixed-rate supply for offtakers. This development provides strong economic incentives for industries to shift to cleaner alternatives.
Boosting Confidence Across Value Chain
SECI has acted as the intermediary procurer in this auction, operating under the guidance of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), with key support from the Department of Fertilizers and participating buyers.
The auction witnessed intense competition, signaling robust confidence from investors and developers in India’s green hydrogen roadmap. The availability of strong payment security mechanisms further enhances the scheme’s credibility and investor appeal.
Strengthening India’s Green Hydrogen Push
This auction milestone marks a turning point in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The aggressive price discovery will catalyse the transition to clean energy across sectors, particularly fertilizers, refining, and shipping.
With more auctions on the horizon, the government is aiming to rapidly scale up domestic production, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and strengthen the economic viability of green energy.
