New Delhi: France is reportedly exploring the procurement of India’s Pinaka rocket system as a reciprocal goodwill gesture alongside the ongoing discussions on India’s proposed acquisition of 114 Dassault Rafale fighter jets.

This potential defence purchase by France highlights a deepening bilateral strategic partnership between the two nations and marks a rare instance of European interest in indigenous Indian military hardware.

What Is the Pinaka Rocket System?

The Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) is an indigenous artillery system developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Designed to replace older artillery systems, Pinaka provides rapid, high-volume firepower — launching up to 12 rockets in under a minute.

What are the Features of Pinaka

  • Quick salvo firing capability.
  • Strong battlefield accuracy and mobility.
  • Operational range of ~90 km, with extended-range variants in development.

Pinaka has also drawn export interest from several countries — including Armenia — and is considered a combat-proven system with flexibility for future upgrades.

India France Pinaka Deal: Why France Is Interested

France has long been a key defence partner for India. The possible interest in Pinaka is driven by several factors:

1. Reciprocal Gesture in Defence Ties

With India progressing toward a massive 114 Rafale fighter jet deal, valued around $35–40 billion, France’s interest in Indian defence technology may be part of a strategic reciprocity — a goodwill counterbalance to a predominantly French to Indian equipment supply chain.

2. Replacing Ageing Artillery Systems

The French Army is reported to be considering modernization of its own artillery arsenal. Older Western rocket artillery, such as the M270 launcher units, are nearing obsolescence, making Pinaka an economically viable alternative compared to expensive Western systems like HIMARS.

3. Strengthening Industrial Collaboration

France’s evaluation of Indian defence systems, including Pinaka, aligns with broader efforts to boost industrial collaboration and create shared supply chains. This comes amid expanding joint ventures in aircraft production, missiles, and submarine procurement.

Background of India France Pinaka Deal

India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has recently approved moving forward with buying 114 Rafale fighter jets from France, building significantly on earlier Rafale contracts. Around 90 aircraft are planned to be manufactured in India, further strengthening defence industrial ties under the “Make in India” initiative.

This deal coincides with high-level talks between Indian and French leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit highlighting broader defence cooperation and joint production goals.

What are the Significance of the India France Pinaka Deal

If France finalizes procurement of the Pinaka rocket system, it would represent:

  • A milestone in India’s defence exports, with a major Western nation purchasing Indian-designed artillery.
  • A deepening of Indo-French strategic cooperation, moving beyond traditional buyer-supplier dynamics.
  • Enhanced interoperability and shared technology exchange in defence manufacturing sectors.

Such a move would further position India not just as a global consumer of advanced weapons systems, but also as a credible exporter and defence technology partner for Western military powers.
