New Delhi: India and New Zealand reaffirmed their growing defence partnership and strategic cooperation during a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi, signalling a renewed thrust in bilateral ties across both security and economic domains.
On August 4, 2025, Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth met with Kathleen Pearce, Head of the International Branch at New Zealand’s Ministry of Defence, and Patrick John Rata, the New Zealand High Commissioner to India. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to expanding cooperation in key areas of defence and regional security.
Defence Talks Signal Deeper Alignment
Held at the Indian Ministry of Defence, the discussions reflected both nations’ resolve to strengthen strategic alignment through enhanced defence technology collaboration, military training exchanges, joint maritime security initiatives, and new areas of bilateral engagement.
The momentum continued with a separate meeting between Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and the New Zealand delegation led by Kathleen Pearce and High Commissioner Rata. During this engagement, the two sides formally launched a Bilateral Strategic Dialogue, a new institutional framework to enable regular, structured discussions on defence policies, security threats, and operational collaboration.
Both countries expressed satisfaction over the existing foundation of defence ties and emphasized the need to scale cooperation to meet evolving regional and global challenges particularly in the Indo-Pacific.
Strategic Convergence Extends to Trade

Complementing the defence dialogue, economic cooperation between India and New Zealand gained traction with the conclusion of the second round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations on July 25, 2025, also held in New Delhi.
Both delegations conducted comprehensive talks across several domains:
- Trade in goods and services
- Investment promotion
- Rules of origin and customs
- Trade facilitation
- Technical barriers and sanitary/phytosanitary regulations
A mutual determination to secure early convergence on key issues was evident, with both governments reaffirming their aim to forge a balanced and forward-looking trade pact.

Shared Values, Stronger Ties
The robust bilateral progress builds on longstanding historical linkages. India and New Zealand share membership in the Commonwealth, a common law heritage, and a deep commitment to democratic governance, economic development, and pluralism.
These shared values have created fertile ground for sustained cooperation in international forums, with both sides now looking to strategically align their defence and economic priorities in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
Path Ahead: Indo-Pacific Stability & Resilience

The recent defence discussions and trade negotiations reflect growing synergy between New Delhi and Wellington as they seek to bolster peace, security, and sustainable development in the region.
As the bilateral relationship matures, India and New Zealand are poised to translate high-level engagements into tangible outcomes, strengthening their partnership not only for mutual benefit but also for the broader Indo-Pacific strategic architecture.
