New Delhi: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Minister of Communications and DoNER, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Department of Posts (DoP) has rolled out IT 2.0 – Advanced Postal Technology (APT). This nationwide upgrade, covering 1.65 lakh post offices, represents a milestone in India Post’s journey toward Digital India and Make in India.
A Leap in Postal Digitalisation
Building upon the earlier IT Modernisation Project 1.0, the Advanced Postal Technology platform introduces a microservices-based application offering faster and more reliable citizen services. Developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), the platform is hosted on the Government of India’s MeghRaj 2.0 cloud and supported by BSNL’s connectivity backbone.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the scale of transformation, stating, “APT will transform India Post into a world-class public logistics organisation. Led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji from the front, this is Aatmanirbhar Bharat in full strength, charting the path for a stronger, self-reliant Digital India.”
Key Features of IT 2.0
The APT system introduces several next-generation capabilities:
- Micro-services and Open API-based architecture
- Unified user interface
- Cloud-ready deployment
- End-to-end digital solutions from booking to delivery
- QR-code payments and OTP-based delivery
- Open Network system ensuring rural reliability
- DIGIPIN, a 10-digit alphanumeric code for delivery accuracy
- Enhanced reporting and analytics
Nationwide Implementation and Employee Training
The rollout began with a pilot in Karnataka Postal Circle in May–June 2025. Following refinements, a phased implementation was conducted across all 23 postal circles. By 4 August 2025, more than 1.70 lakh offices including post offices, mail offices, and administrative units were fully operational on APT.
To ensure smooth adoption, India Post trained over 4.6 lakh employees through a cascade model involving Master Trainers, User Champions, and End-Users under the principle of “Train – Retrain – Refresh.” This ensured preparedness and effective usage across every level of the workforce.
Scaling New Heights in Service Delivery
The system has already demonstrated resilience by handling over 32 lakh bookings and 37 lakh deliveries in a single day. IT 2.0 enables India Post to enhance delivery accuracy, boost efficiency, and expand its role in financial inclusion and last-mile connectivity.
Bridging the Rural–Urban Digital Divide
The successful completion of IT 2.0 reaffirms India Post’s position as a modern, technology-driven service provider while maintaining its legacy of trust and unmatched rural reach. With this digital leap, India Post is set to bridge the rural–urban divide, promote financial inclusion, and deliver world-class postal and financial services to citizens nationwide.
