Kochi: The Indian Navy is set to commission the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] Ikshak, the third ship in its SVL series and the first to be stationed at the Southern Naval Command. The commissioning ceremony will be held at the Naval Base in Kochi, in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.
Indigenous Shipbuilding: A Milestone for Self-Reliance
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, Ikshak represents a significant step forward in India’s shipbuilding self-reliance. The vessel boasts over 80% indigenous content, reflecting the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and a collaborative effort with Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

‘Ikshak’: The Guide for Precision Hydrographic Surveys
The name Ikshak, meaning “Guide” in Sanskrit, aptly captures the ship’s role in supporting precise hydrographic survey operations. The vessel is designed to conduct extensive coastal and deep-water surveys of ports, harbors, and navigational channels, producing vital data that will enhance maritime safety and support naval operations.

Advanced Technology for Maritime Safety
Ikshak is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic tools, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). In addition, the ship features a helicopter deck, providing extended operational capability and multi-domain mission support.

The commissioning of Ikshak marks a crucial milestone in the Navy’s efforts to strengthen its survey and charting infrastructure. The ship will play a key role in ensuring safe navigation, supporting port development, and advancing India’s maritime security objectives.
