Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has unveiled a new digital initiative, ‘Akshara’—an innovative online platform aimed at making debit card PIN generation more secure and accessible for its customers.
Moving away from commonly used and easily guessed PINs like birthdates or simple number sequences, the public sector bank now allows users to create PINs using Tamil words or phrases. These personalised linguistic PINs are both meaningful and significantly harder for fraudsters to decode.
IOB’s Managing Director and CEO, Ajay Kumar Srivastava, emphasised that the bank is committed to blending technology with inclusivity. “With Akshara, we’re not just enhancing digital convenience—we’re celebrating our customers’ language and culture. It’s a step forward in making banking more personal and secure,” he said.
The user-friendly portal—available at www.aksharapin.iob.in—has been designed with a special focus on ease of use and enhanced security. By offering Tamil as the medium, the bank aims to strengthen its connection with local communities and promote regional language use in digital banking.
