New Delhi: In a landmark development for Indian Railways, three senior women officers have assumed leadership roles in critical positions, marking a significant stride toward gender inclusivity and diversity at the highest levels of one of India’s largest public sector organisations.
Sonali Mishra: First Woman Director General of Railway Protection Force
The 1993 batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, Ms Sonali Mishra has made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF). Approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Ms Mishra will serve in this prestigious position until her retirement on October 31, 2026. This milestone comes in the 143-year legacy of the RPF, an essential security force tasked with safeguarding railway property and passengers.
Known for her professionalism and strategic leadership, Ms Mishra brings to the role over three decades of rich and varied policing experience. Prior to assuming charge at RPF, she served as the Additional Director General of Police (Selection/Recruitment) in Madhya Pradesh. She also held additional responsibilities as ADG of the Police Training & Research Institute and Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy in Bhopal.
Usha Venugopal: Member (Finance), Railway Board and CEO of IRFC
Veteran finance officer Usha Venugopal, an IRAS officer of 1987 batch, who has dedicated over three decades to railway finance, currently holds the crucial position of Member (Finance) on the Railway Board. In addition to her strategic role overseeing fiscal management across railway zones, she took over as Chairman & CEO of the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) on August 1, 2024, further solidifying her influence on the railway’s financial architecture.
Aruna Nayar: Secretary, Railway Board
Aruna Nayar (IRMS) has been appointed Secretary, Railway Board, reinforcing the increasing presence and influence of women in top policymaking roles within Indian Railways. Her appointment underscores the shift toward more inclusive leadership that values expertise and experience irrespective of gender.
