New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken a major step towards faster, more efficient, and passenger-friendly rail travel by speeding up 549 trains and introducing 122 new services under the Timetable of Trains (TAG) 2026. The revised timetable reflects the Railways’ continued focus on reducing travel time, improving punctuality, and enhancing operational efficiency across all zones.
The sweeping changes include new train introductions, extension of existing services, increased frequency, conversion of trains into superfast categories, and systematic acceleration of running times, benefiting millions of passengers across the country.
122 New Trains Introduced to Improve Connectivity
Under TAG 2026, Indian Railways has introduced 122 new trains, covering premium, express, and passenger segments to cater to growing travel demand and regional connectivity.
The new services include:
- 26 Amrit Bharat trains, including 4 via TAG-TOD
- 60 Mail/Express trains, with 8 introduced under TAG-TOD
- 28 Vande Bharat trains to boost semi-high-speed connectivity
- 2 Rajdhani trains
- 2 Jan Shatabdi trains
- 2 Humsafar trains
- 2 Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services
These additions are aimed at providing faster, reliable, and comfortable travel options, especially for long-distance and intercity passengers.
Zone-Wise Expansion of Train Services
Significant additions and enhancements have been made across all railway zones:
- Central Railway (CR): 4 new trains, 6 extended, 30 speeded up
- East Coast Railway (ECOR): 4 new trains, 4 extended, 3 speeded up
- East Central Railway (ECR): 20 new trains, 20 extended, 12 speeded up
- Eastern Railway (ER): 6 new trains, 4 extended, 32 speeded up
- North Central Railway (NCR): 2 new trains, 4 extended, frequency increased for 2, 1 speeded up
- North Eastern Railway (NER): 8 new trains, 4 extended, frequency increased for 2, 12 speeded up
- Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR): 10 new trains, 36 speeded up
- Northern Railway (NR): 20 new trains, 10 extended, 24 speeded up
- North Western Railway (NWR): 12 new trains, 6 extended, frequency increased for 2, 89 speeded up
- Southern Railway (SR): 6 new trains, 4 extended, 2 converted to superfast, 75 speeded up
- South Western Railway (SWR): 8 new trains, 6 extended, 8 converted to superfast, 117 speeded up
- West Central Railway (WCR): 8 new trains, 27 speeded up
- Western Railway (WR): 10 new trains, 10 extended, frequency increased for 2, 80 speeded up
549 Trains Speeded Up to Cut Travel Time
One of the most impactful aspects of TAG 2026 is the speeding up of 549 trains, resulting in reduced journey durations and improved punctuality.
Time Savings Achieved:
- 376 trains sped up by 5–15 minutes
- 105 trains sped up by 16–30 minutes
- 48 trains sped up by 31–59 minutes
- 20 trains sped up by 60 minutes or more

The South Western Railway (SWR) emerged as the top contributor, speeding up 117 trains, including:
- 66 trains by 5–15 minutes
- 29 trains by 16–30 minutes
- 12 trains by 31–59 minutes
- 10 trains by over 60 minutes
Other major contributors include:
- North Western Railway (NWR): 89 trains speeded up
- Southern Railway (SR): 75 trains speeded up
- Western Railway (WR): 80 trains speeded up

- Eastern Railway: 32 trains speeded up

Conversion to Superfast and Frequency Increases
As part of the efficiency drive:
- 10 trains were converted to Superfast category
- 8 trains saw frequency enhancement, improving availability and reducing waiting lists on busy routes
