Kolkata: The iconic MCGS Barracuda, the first-ever warship exported by India, has come back to its birthplace — Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd — for a significant refit. Originally built in 2015 and handed over to the Mauritius Coast Guard as part of a landmark diplomatic initiative, Barracuda symbolizes India’s emergence as a key player in global naval exports.
A Milestone in India’s Naval Diplomacy
The export of Barracuda marked a historic moment when India joined the select group of nations capable of delivering advanced naval platforms to international partners. This Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) has been a strong emblem of India’s defence manufacturing capabilities and diplomatic outreach in the Indian Ocean region.

GRSE’s Role in Sustaining Maritime Partnerships
After a short refit at GRSE in 2021, the Barracuda now returns for a comprehensive refit under the Ministry of External Affairs’ cooperation programme. This project not only strengthens India-Mauritius defence ties but also highlights GRSE’s engineering excellence and commitment to sustaining naval assets over their operational life cycles.
Engineering Legacy and Strategic Importance
This refit goes beyond routine maintenance — it is a continuation of a legacy built on diplomacy, mutual trust, and skilled craftsmanship. It reflects GRSE’s pivotal role in India’s maritime diplomacy and its ongoing contribution to building and maintaining strategic partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.
