India’s renewable energy installed capacity saw a 15.84% increase, reaching 209.44 GW by December 2024, compared to 180.80 GW a year ago, according to an official statement released on Monday. The country added 28.64 GW of renewable capacity during 2024, more than doubling the 13.05 GW added in 2023, marking a historic expansion in the sector.
Key Contributors to the Growth:
- Solar Power:
- Addition: 24.54 GW in 2024.
- Total Capacity: 97.86 GW, reflecting a 33.47% year-on-year growth.
- Solar power led the growth, accounting for the majority of new capacity additions.
- Wind Power:
- Addition: 3.42 GW in 2024.
- Total Capacity: 48.16 GW, marking a 7.64% increase compared to 2023.
- Bioenergy:
- Capacity Growth: From 10.84 GW in 2023 to 11.35 GW in 2024.
- Small Hydro Power:
- Incremental Growth: From 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.
Government Initiatives Driving Growth:
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), under Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, has been implementing several key initiatives to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
This significant expansion underscores India’s commitment to transitioning to a greener energy mix and reducing dependency on fossil fuels, aligning with global climate goals and the nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
