Naples/New Delhi: The Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate, INS Tamal, made a significant port call in Naples, Italy, on August 13, 2025, during its return journey to India after commissioning in Russia on July 1. The visit marked a milestone in the deepening of Indo–Italian ties, elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023.
Strategic Partnership in Focus
India and Italy have steadily expanded cooperation across defence, energy, and technology. The Naples visit provided a key opportunity to reinforce naval interoperability and joint readiness, reflecting the growing convergence between the two nations in the Indo–Pacific.
Joint Drills at Sea: PASSEX With ITS Trieste
During its stay, INS Tamal conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Navy’s landing platform dock, ITS Trieste. The exercise included communication drills, tactical manoeuvres, and helicopter flying operations, enhancing coordination and demonstrating the operational synergy between the two navies.
Bilateral and Cultural Engagements
Beyond naval drills, the port call featured professional exchanges, cross-deck visits, and interactions with Italian civil and naval dignitaries. These engagements highlighted the importance of dialogue in strengthening defence cooperation.
The visit also celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day on August 15. Cultural programmes and community events showcased the historic bonds between India and Italy, reflecting civilisational ties alongside military collaboration.

The visit of INS Tamal symbolises India’s commitment to its growing partnership with Italy. With defence, technology, and energy as core pillars of the strategic dialogue, the two nations are working towards deeper collaboration in maritime security and beyond.
