The Uttar Pradesh government has appointed Mr. Binod Kumar Singh, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, as the new Director General (DG) of Cyber. With this promotion, he will now spearhead the state’s cyber security and cybercrime prevention strategies. Mr. Singh was previously serving as Additional Director General (ADG) Crime and had also handled cybercrime responsibilities in earlier assignments.

Bihar connection of a top cop
Mr. Singh, popularly known as B.K. Singh, hails from Barka Lauhar-Farna village in Badhara block of Bhojpur district, Bihar. Despite serving in Uttar Pradesh for over three decades, his native place continues to take pride in his achievements. His father, Mr. Kishun Singh, had served as a director in the electricity department, while Mr. Singh is the youngest among three brothers. The people of his village have expressed happiness at his elevation to the rank of DG.
A decorated career spanning 31 years
In his 31-year-long career, Mr. Singh has served in several key districts of Uttar Pradesh including Siddharthnagar, Mirzapur, Banda, Sonbhadra, Bijnor, and Allahabad. He has also been posted as SSP in Faizabad, Allahabad, and Bulandshahr. His distinguished service has earned him multiple honors such as the President’s Gallantry Medal, Commendable Service Medal, and Excellent Service Medal.
Breaking the backbone of cyber criminals
Mr. Singh’s appointment is seen as recognition of his strong track record in combating cybercrime. In June 2024, he was made ADG of the Cyber Crime Department, and within just 13 months, he significantly disrupted cybercriminal networks across the state. The Uttar Pradesh government has acknowledged his sharp strategic acumen in dealing with evolving digital threats, making him the right choice for this critical position.
A trusted officer in national security roles
Beyond state policing, Mr. Singh has also contributed at the national level. He was appointed as ADG in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on June 14, 2023, and has earlier served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the then Home Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh. His expertise in both field policing and policy-level responsibilities has made him a highly respected officer.
With his promotion to Cyber DG, Uttar Pradesh is expected to bolster its fight against cybercrime, ensuring stronger digital safety for its citizens.
