Chandigarh: The Government of Haryana has appointed 1992 batch senior IPS officer Om Prakash (OP) Singh as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana, assigning him the additional charge during the leave of incumbent DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, an IPS officer of 1992 batch.
The move comes following a controversy surrounding the tragic suicide of 2001 batch IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.
Appointment Details and Official Order
An official order issued by Sumita Mishra Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Haryana, stated:
“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Om Prakash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave period of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur.”
Currently, OP Singh holds multiple key positions including Managing Director of Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Director General of Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB), and Director of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Madhuban.
OP Singh: A Veteran with Over Three Decades of Policing Experience
With over 32 years in the police force, OP Singh’s career spans diverse roles –
- Superintendent of Police (SP) in five districts
- Police Commissioner of Ambala-Panchkula and Faridabad
- Inspector General (IG) of Rewari and Hisar Range police
- Played a critical role in framing the Rules of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (2004-07) during his tenure at the Union Finance Ministry, including registering the first-ever case under the anti-money laundering law.
Contribution to Sports and Public Initiatives
Between 2008 and 2012, Singh served as Director of Haryana’s Sports Department. Here, he –
- Devised the PIE (Participation, Inclusion & Excellence) Model for sports promotion
- Launched the SPAT Sports Scholarship Program under the ‘Play for India’ campaign, which attracted over a million children to sports across Haryana
