New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has promoted 45 senior officers of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to the grade of Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Pr. CIT) on an in-situ basis, effective from the date of assuming charge.
This promotion comes in the wake of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) empanelling 46 IRS officers for elevation to the Level 15 of the Pay Matrix, corresponding to the rank of Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, for the panel year 2025.
According to the official order, the promoted officers will continue holding their existing charges until formal posting orders are issued.
Background: ACC Approval and Empanelment
On September 13, 2025, the ACC approved a list of 46 IRS officers for promotion to the Principal Commissioner rank. With the current order, 45 officers have been formally promoted, while one officer’s promotion is pending.
This marks a significant move in the senior-level restructuring of the Income Tax Department, strengthening its leadership across zones as the CBDT continues its administrative reforms.
