In a landmark move, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday (July 21, 2025) announced the launch of India’s first-ever mining tourism initiative, positioning the mineral-rich state as a pioneer in an unexplored tourism segment. The initiative was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).
This announcement follows Mr. Soren’s recent visit to the Gava Museum of Mines in Barcelona, where he explored ancient mining tools and techniques dating back to the Neolithic era. Drawing inspiration from global mining heritage models, the Chief Minister said the state is now aiming to present its mining legacy as an educational and tourist experience.
Showcasing Jharkhand’s Mining Legacy
Jharkhand accounts for nearly 40% of India’s total mineral resources, and the new tourism initiative seeks to transform that wealth into a unique visitor experience. The collaboration between JTDC and CCL is expected to open operational coal mines to the public, including students, tourists, and research groups, thereby offering insights into the mining process, history, and local economy.
State Tourism Minister Sudivya Kumar, who was present at the MoU signing, highlighted the significance of the move. “Jharkhand has long been recognised as a mining state. With this step, we are now opening up the sector to tourists, students, and the general public. This is just the beginning,” he said, adding that the government is also working to expand the circuit by involving Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
Expansion Plans and Stakeholder Support
CCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Mr. Nilendu Kumar Singh expressed appreciation to the state government for the opportunity to participate in the initiative. “After multiple rounds of discussion with the Tourism Minister and his team, we have formalised the MoU today. This project marks a new chapter for both Jharkhand and CCL. We also plan to open more mines in the near future as part of this tourism circuit,” Mr. Singh added.
Officials said the mining tourism initiative will include guided mine visits, interpretation centres, safety briefings, and immersive experiences aimed at educating visitors on mining operations, geology, and safety protocols.
A First for India
Jharkhand’s mining tourism initiative is the first of its kind in the country and reflects the state’s effort to diversify its tourism offerings beyond its rich cultural, religious, and ecological attractions. It also marks a significant move in promoting industrial heritage tourism, in line with global trends.
With plans underway to expand the circuit, Jharkhand is poised to become a national model for innovative tourism that combines history, education, and economic development.
