Oxford/United Kingdom/Ranchi: On January 26, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand visited Somerville College, University of Oxford, as part of his academic and international engagement in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1879, Somerville College is renowned for its pioneering role in global education and was one of the first colleges at Oxford to admit women, at a time when higher education for women was rare.
The college has a distinguished list of alumni, including Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the UK; Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India (honorary degree recipient); and Cornelia Sorabji, the first Indian woman to study law abroad.
High-Level Reception Hosted by College Principal
The Chief Minister was warmly received at a high-level reception hosted by Catherine Royle, Principal of Somerville College, who took office in September 2025. A former British diplomat and senior NATO official, Principal Royle praised the Chief Minister’s efforts in indigenous welfare, sustainability, climate action, and equitable access to higher education.
The reception also included students, scholars, and Indian researchers affiliated with the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development, a premier institution established in 2013 with support from the Government of India.

Focus on Sustainable Development and Governance
The Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development serves as a hub for research on environmental policy, climate action, social justice, governance, and public policy. Over 40 Indian scholars are currently associated with the Centre, including Mr. Ravi Shankar Shukla, IAS, who is pursuing advanced studies on urban water policy and management.
During the reception, discussions highlighted opportunities for deeper collaboration between Oxford scholars and Jharkhand’s government, particularly in the areas of environmental policy, sustainable development, and public governance reforms.
Engagement with Students and Scholars
The Chief Minister’s visit also included informal interactions with students and researchers. Scholars expressed interest in organizing a dedicated workshop with the CM to learn about Jharkhand’s government programs, public policy initiatives, and governance practices. They invited him to share experiences on policy design, implementation, and sustainable development models in Jharkhand.
Strengthening India-UK Academic Ties
The visit underscored the historic academic and intellectual bridge between Oxford and India. It reaffirmed Somerville College’s commitment to supporting Indian scholars and aligning its research with India’s developmental, environmental, and governance priorities, particularly those of Jharkhand.
The event highlighted the mutual interest in knowledge exchange and set the stage for further engagement between Jharkhand and Oxford, emphasizing sustainability, climate action, and inclusive governance.
