Ranchi: As the Union Budget 2026-27 is scheduled to be presented in Parliament on Sunday, political leaders from Jharkhand have raised key demands focusing on tourism, infrastructure, and development funds. Rajya Sabha MP and JMM leader Mahua Maji highlighted the need for stronger central support for the mineral-rich yet economically underdeveloped state.
“Jharkhand has enormous mineral wealth, yet its people continue to face poverty,” Maji told PTI, emphasizing that the central government should play a significant role in improving the socio-economic condition of the state.
Call for Special Tourism Package
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) general secretary and central spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stressed the need for a dedicated tourism package. He noted that while the Centre has promoted tourism in states like Goa and those in the Northeast, Jharkhand’s potential remains untapped.
“We want a special tourism package for Jharkhand that highlights its cultural heritage, forests, and religious circuits,” Bhattacharya said.

Demand for Expanded Railway Connectivity
Leaders also highlighted weak rail connectivity, particularly with western states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, as well as southern regions. Bhattacharya urged the government to strengthen railway networks, ensuring better access for both business and tourism development.
“Rail connectivity with the Northeast and southern states also needs urgent improvement to boost trade and mobility,” he added.
Release of Pending Central Funds and Coal Royalties
Maji stressed the need for a separate budgetary provision to release Jharkhand’s pending ₹1.36 lakh crore from the Centre. She also raised concerns about the Jharia underground coal fire, which continues to threaten human lives and cause significant economic losses.
Former JPCC president Rajesh Thakur added that coal royalty payments pending with the Centre should be addressed in the upcoming budget.
Political Reactions and Expectations
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047, expressing confidence that the Union Budget would provide momentum toward this goal. Marandi also defended the Centre, noting that funds are provided under various schemes in fixed ratios between the Centre and states.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash expressed optimism that the Union Budget 2026-27 would focus on poor families, middle-class households, women, and youth, bringing widespread benefits across the nation.
Looking Ahead
Jharkhand’s political leaders, spanning JMM, Congress, and BJP, have set clear expectations for the Union Budget 2026-27, emphasizing development, infrastructure, tourism, and welfare initiatives. Analysts say the budget could play a crucial role in addressing the state’s long-standing economic and connectivity challenges.
