In a significant development that highlights the ongoing power tussle between the Centre and the Jharkhand government, it has emerged that the state Director General of Police (DGP), Mr. Anurag Gupta (1989-batch Jharkhand cadre IPS officer), is not receiving any salary after his retirement on April 30, 2025, despite continuing to serve in the post.
According to reports, the office of the Principal Accountant General (PAG) has issued a zero-salary slip for the month of May, indicating that Mr. Gupta is no longer being treated as a serving officer in official records. Consequently, no salary is being disbursed to him from the state treasury.
This controversy is rooted in the ongoing disagreement between the Centre and the state government. While the Centre maintains that Mr. Gupta has retired and is no longer eligible to serve as DGP, the state government argues that he was appointed for a fixed two-year term and, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines, is entitled to continue in office even after the age of 60.
The situation has now escalated, with the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) office refusing to issue his pay slip—a necessary step for the release of his salary. As a result, Mr. Gupta remains at work but is not being paid.
Despite the standoff, the Jharkhand government continues to back its decision, though the unresolved issue signals that further developments are likely in the days ahead.
