Jharkhand is witnessing rapid infrastructure development with seven major national highway projects set to give a new impetus to connectivity, trade, and tourism in the state. The projects include Ranchi-Banaras Economic Corridor, Raipur-Dhanbad, Delhi-Kolkata Six Lane, Ranchi-Patna, Deoghar-Basukinath, Mahagama-Hansdiha, and the Sahibganj-Ganga Bridge.
These highways will link Jharkhand more efficiently with Delhi, Kolkata, Patna, Raipur, and Banaras, significantly reducing travel time and boosting industrial growth, mineral logistics, and tourism, particularly in Garhwa, Palamu, Koderma, Hazaribagh, and Santhal Pargana.
Ranchi-Banaras Corridor: 12-Hour Journey in Just 4.5 Hours
Work on the 413 km long Ranchi-Banaras Economic Corridor, costing Rs. 13,000 crore, is 60% complete. Out of this, 253 km falls in Jharkhand with an expenditure of Rs. 8,000 crore. Once completed by January 2028, travel time from Ranchi to Banaras will shrink from 12 hours to just 4.5 hours. The project will boost economic activities in Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, and Lohardaga, besides improving connectivity to Baba Bansidhar temple. Some portions are pending forest clearance.
Raipur-Dhanbad Project: Travel Time Cut by Half
The 626 km Raipur-Dhanbad corridor, costing Rs. 18,000 crore, is 77% complete. Of this, 238 km lies in Jharkhand, with Rs. 8,000 crore earmarked. Featuring a 90 km greenfield road, it will reduce the 16-hour journey to just 8 hours. Improved access to Gola, Ormanjhi, and Hundru Falls is expected to spur industrial and tourism development.
Delhi-Kolkata Six Lane: 30 Hours Reduced to 14 Hours
The 1523 km Delhi-Kolkata Six Lane project is targeted for completion by June 2026. With 146 km passing through Jharkhand at a cost of Rs. 6,000 crore, the project includes flyovers, 26 underpasses, and a major railway overbridge at Chauparan, Barhi, and Barkatha. The road will cut the travel time between Delhi and Kolkata from 30 hours to 14 hours, giving a big push to trade and commerce.
Ranchi-Patna Four Lane and Sahibganj Bridge to Spur Regional Growth
Nearly 88% work on the 323 km Ranchi-Patna four-lane highway is complete. The project, costing Rs. 5,000 crore, is expected to be finished by December 2027. It will improve connectivity between Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Barhi, and Koderma with Patna, enhancing tourism in Koderma and Jhumri Tilaiya, and easing mineral transport.
The Deoghar-Basukinath (34 km) and Mahagama-Hansdiha four-lane roads are 61% and 100% complete respectively, both set to be ready by December 2025 at a cost of Rs. 1,500 crore each. These roads will particularly benefit pilgrims traveling to Baba Vaidyanath Dham.
The 27 km Sahibganj-Ganga Bridge, 77% complete at a cost of Rs. 2,000 crore, will link Santhal Pargana directly with Bihar, providing a major boost to trade and connectivity in the region.
Economic Impact Already Visible
Most of these projects are nearing completion, and their impact is already visible. Land prices in the project areas have skyrocketed—up to four times higher than earlier—with demand so high that land is scarcely available. Improved public facilities and changing lifestyles in areas where over 80% work is complete indicate the transformative power of these highways.
These seven projects are poised to usher Jharkhand into a new era of connectivity, economic progress, and regional development.
