Davos: In a major move to position Jharkhand as a hub for sustainable industrial growth, the Jharkhand government and Tata Steel Limited signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 20, 2026, at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. The proposed investment, valued at over ₹11,000 crore, will focus on New Age Green Steel Technologies, supporting India’s transition to low-carbon and environmentally responsible manufacturing while creating substantial employment opportunities in the state.
According to the Jharkhand Chief Minister’s Office, the partnership will bring advanced green steel technologies from the Netherlands and Germany to Jharkhand, reinforcing the state’s position as a key contributor to the global shift toward sustainable and future-ready industrial practices.
Key Details of the Tata Steel Investment
Tata Steel plans to establish a commercial-scale green steel facility in Jamshedpur with a production capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes per annum by 2030. The project aligns with Jharkhand’s vision to diversify its economy from mineral dependence toward clean and sustainable industrial development.
Rajat Kumar, Secretary of Industry, Government of Jharkhand, stated, “Pharma, steel, and technology-led green industries are critical for our future industrial growth. The incentive frameworks and global partnerships will ensure time-bound execution and globally competitive operations.”
Industrial Tourism and Skill Development Initiatives
Alongside the green steel MoU, the government also signed a separate agreement with Tata Steel to promote industrial tourism at Tata Group-associated mining and manufacturing sites. This initiative aims to create awareness about industrial processes, attract investment, and foster local economic development.
The Jharkhand delegation also met with Hitachi officials, focusing on power systems, power transmission, advanced infrastructure, and skill development. Hitachi highlighted its role in managing power systems for nine metro rail networks in India and its digital dashboard for power electronics, emphasizing its technological capabilities.
Joint meetings with Hitachi’s Indian and Jharkhand manufacturing units and other Japanese companies are planned in February–March 2026 to explore short-term and long-term collaborative projects.
Jharkhand’s Vision for Green and Inclusive Growth
Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who was honored with the prestigious WEF White Badge, stated that Jharkhand is now focused on green industrial development, critical minerals, clean energy, human resource development, and inclusive economic growth. He emphasized that the state, marking 25 years since its formation, is emerging as a future-ready industrial destination, no longer limited to a mineral-based economy.
Mr. Soren and the official delegation, including MLA Kalpana Murmu Soren, also engaged with Bloomberg Asia-Pacific and met with other global business leaders, highlighting Jharkhand’s investment opportunities, strategic location, and skilled workforce.
Significance of the Agreement
The MoU with Tata Steel is a milestone for Jharkhand’s industrial trajectory, signaling its readiness to embrace green technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and global industrial partnerships. The initiative is expected to:
- Accelerate low-carbon steel production.
- Generate direct and indirect employment.
- Establish Jharkhand as a key player in India’s green industrial landscape.
- Strengthen international collaboration in technology and industrial innovation.
Jharkhand’s focus on green steel, clean energy, and industrial tourism, combined with strategic partnerships with global leaders like Tata Steel and Hitachi, underscores the state’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
