Justice Subhendu Samanta has been appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court, following his elevation from the position of Additional Judge. The appointment was formalized through a government notification issued on April 23, 2025.
The notification, signed by the Joint Secretary to the Government of India, stated:
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Subhendu Samanta, Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be a Judge of that High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
Born on November 25, 1971, Justice Samanta began his legal journey after completing his law education at Calcutta University, Hazra Campus. He started his career as an advocate at the Tamluk District Court and later joined the higher judicial service through direct recruitment in 2009.
Over the years, Justice Samanta has held several significant judicial and administrative positions, including:
- Additional District and Sessions Judge at Paschim Medinipur
- Judge of the CBI-designated 3rd Special Court in Calcutta
- District and Sessions Judge in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Birbhum, and Nadia
- Chief Judge at the City Sessions Court in Calcutta
- Judge at the 5th Bench of the City Civil Court
