Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. The oath of office was administered by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato, Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari, Minister Deepika Pandey Singh, and several other dignitaries and officials.
Justice Chauhan, who was the second senior-most judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, was recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 26, 2025.
Born on January 9, 1964, Justice Chauhan completed his legal education at Punjab University in Chandigarh. He was enrolled as an advocate in the Himachal Pradesh Bar Council in 1989 and had a wide-ranging legal practice across various fields of law.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2014 and was later made a permanent judge. In 2019, he participated in an international exchange programme in Romania focused on reforms, care, and protection of child services, showcasing his engagement with judicial reforms and child welfare.
With his swearing-in, Justice Chauhan brings decades of judicial experience and administrative acumen to the helm of the Jharkhand High Court.
