Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has refused to quash a defamation case filed by IPS officer D. Roopa Moudgil against IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri, allowing the criminal proceedings to continue in a Bengaluru Magistrate Court.
Case to Proceed in Magistrate Court
Following the High Court’s order, the case will now proceed before the 7th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court, which had earlier admitted Roopa’s private complaint and issued notice to Sindhuri. The court will examine the allegations in detail, including the statements made by Sindhuri and their circulation on social media.
Background of the Defamation Case
The complaint stems from 2023, when D. Roopa alleged that Rohini Sindhuri made derogatory remarks about her during a media interaction. The comments were later circulated widely on social media, leading to reputational harm and emotional distress for Roopa.
Roopa claimed that following the public remarks, a transfer order was issued without a clear posting, leaving her without an official assignment for nearly six months, causing professional and financial setbacks.
Social Media Impact
The remarks made by Sindhuri on 19 February 2023 were shared on X (formerly Twitter), reportedly receiving around 1.8 lakh views. Roopa has alleged that the widespread circulation of the statements humiliated her and negatively impacted her professional reputation. She also cited emotional distress suffered by her family due to the incident.
Next Steps
With the High Court declining to interfere, the Bengaluru Magistrate Court will now continue hearings into the case. Further proceedings are expected to explore the context of the 2023 statements, their social media circulation, and the alleged damage caused to Roopa’s career and reputation.
