Bengaluru: In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle in Karnataka, senior IAS officer Tushar Giri Nath (1993 batch, Karnataka cadre) has been appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Urban Development Department (UDD). The move comes in the wake of the superannuation of Umashankar S.R. (IAS: 1993: KN), who officially retires today, concluding his tenure as ACS, UDD and Administrator of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Until now, Giri Nath was serving as the Chief Commissioner of BBMP. With his elevation, he has also been assigned concurrent charge of two key positions: ACS, Home Department, and Administrator, BBMP – roles that signal the state government’s confidence in his administrative capabilities during a pivotal phase of urban governance reform.
His appointment had been widely anticipated, with sources previously indicating to legendofficers.com that he was the frontrunner for the UDD post. His new responsibilities will include overseeing the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the redrawing of municipal boundaries – both critical components of Karnataka’s urban transformation agenda.
In a related development, Maheshwar Rao M. (IAS: 1995: KN) has been appointed as the new Chief Commissioner of BBMP. He will manage the role alongside his current assignment as Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), ensuring continuity and coordination between city administration and urban transit development.
These strategic appointments reflect the state government’s focus on strengthening leadership in key urban sectors as Karnataka advances its infrastructure and governance reforms.
