In a major boost to India’s clean energy transition, the Karnataka government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India) Limited to develop 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity across the state at an estimated investment of ₹5,000 crore.
The agreement was formally inked in the presence of K.J. George, Minister of Energy, and M.B. Patil, Minister of Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development. The ambitious plan includes a blend of ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating solar installations, alongside wind energy and integrated storage systems.
Minister Patil emphasized Karnataka’s support for flexible land acquisition mechanisms such as leasing land from farmers and coordination through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). He also assured GAIL of fast-track clearances and state incentives to ensure smooth implementation.
Minister George hailed the MoU as a “turning point” for the state’s clean energy roadmap, citing Karnataka’s success with the Pavagada Solar Park, which produces 2,050 MW annually, and noting that 10,000 additional acres have already been offered by farmers for future projects.
GAIL’s strategic intent includes leveraging existing solar parks for rapid rollout aligned with its capital expenditure plan. The partnership is expected to catalyze further clean energy investments and cement Karnataka’s reputation as a national leader in renewable energy.
