The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has reported significant progress in its ongoing well control operations at the RDS#147A site in Assam’s Rudrasagar Oil Field, where the gas flow rate has now been substantially reduced — a major milestone in its containment efforts.
An international team of experts from CUDD Pressure Control, USA, which arrived at the site recently, has conducted a preliminary assessment and reviewed all mitigation measures executed by ONGC thus far. The experts endorsed the response plan and confirmed that ONGC’s strategy and execution align with global best practices for safe well control.
The incident has affected more than 1,500 people in the surrounding area. As a safety measure, 70 families have been shifted to relief camps by the local administration, while ONGC continues to assist in coordination with district officials.
Next Phase of Operations Underway
As part of the forward action plan developed jointly with the expert team, extensive site preparations are being undertaken. The process of extracting tubulars from the well has begun, and cranes are being mobilized to facilitate the removal of tubing from the rig floor.
Water blanketing continues round-the-clock as a critical safety precaution, with real-time monitoring of the Low Explosive Limit (LEL) levels through gas detectors to ensure air quality around the site remains within safe limits.
Environmental Vigilance and Medical Support
With the well located near the Dikhow River, flood level monitoring remains active to ensure all safety and environmental protocols are strictly adhered to. ONGC has also set up medical assistance at the nearby relief camp to support anyone in need, reaffirming its commitment to safety and community welfare throughout the containment effort.
This multi-agency and expert-led collaboration marks a promising phase in ONGC’s management of the incident and reflects the company’s preparedness in handling complex well control scenarios.
