Who is IAS Ruchika Chauhan?
Born on December 20, 1984, in Indore, Ms. Chauhan completed her schooling in her hometown before earning a BE degree in Electronics and Communication. Driven by her passion for public service, she successfully cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2010, securing an All-India Rank of 50. She was the only candidate from Madhya Pradesh to qualify as an IAS officer that year, beginning her administrative career as an Assistant Collector in Sehore district.
Ms. Chauhan’s tenure in Gwalior is marked by several impactful initiatives. Her flagship scheme “Shakti Didi” has empowered women by employing them at petrol pumps—offering economic independence to widows and abandoned women, while breaking gender stereotypes in a male-dominated sector. She is also spearheading the development of a women-led industrial park in the region, envisioned as a first-of-its-kind platform to support women entrepreneurs with dedicated infrastructure and enterprise support. Her efforts have helped attract investments worth Rs. 25,000 crore to Gwalior during the Madhya Pradesh Global Investor Summit, boosting the city’s industrial profile.
Environmental sustainability is another major focus of Ms. Chauhan’s administration. She initiated the city forest project, beginning with the ecological revival of Alapur Hill, aiming to expand green cover and improve urban air quality. In the health sector, she has been proactive in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates by ensuring pregnant women receive consistent medical attention, nutrition, and support services.
Her humane approach to administration was evident when she, along with Dabra SDM Mr. Divyanshu Chaudhary, utilized data from rejected Aadhaar applications to identify and reunite 10 missing persons with their families—some of whom had been separated for over a decade.
From addressing grievances like a youth arriving at her office with complaints in a yellow sack, to launching inclusive development programs, Ms. Ruchika Chauhan exemplifies visionary leadership. Her dedication to inclusive governance, women’s empowerment, environmental conservation, and compassionate public service is reshaping Gwalior into a model district for sustainable and equitable growth.
