Mumbai: In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has formed a strategic partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Defence PSU, to jointly support the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme — India’s flagship 5th-generation fighter aircraft initiative led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
The L&T-BEL consortium is set to participate in the Expression of Interest (EoI) process floated by the ADA for the AMCA programme by submitting their proposal in the coming weeks.
A New Chapter in Indian Aerospace Collaboration
The alliance brings together L&T’s expertise in defence engineering and systems integration with BEL’s proven capabilities in mission-critical defence electronics. The goal is to offer a world-class solution for the Indian Air Force’s future air superiority needs.
“The collaboration with BEL marks a significant leap in our commitment to the modernisation of India’s defence capabilities,” said Mr S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman & MD, L&T.
“Our combined efforts will play a crucial role in bolstering national security and advancing self-reliance in defence technologies.”
Past Legacy, Future Vision
Both companies have previously contributed to India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas programme by supplying critical components like aero-structure modules, avionics, and electronic systems.
With the AMCA programme, the partnership is set to scale new heights — enabling India to join the elite club of nations with operational 5th-generation stealth fighter aircraft.
“With L&T’s engineering strengths and BEL’s defence electronics expertise, we are confident of delivering a solution that will serve the Indian Air Force for decades,” said Mr Manoj Jain, CMD, BEL.
“This collaboration is a crucial step in realising India’s ambitions in cutting-edge defence aviation.”
About the AMCA Programme
AMCA is India’s 5th-generation stealth fighter aircraft under development by ADA.
Designed for air superiority and deep strike missions, AMCA will feature stealth capabilities, advanced avionics, and supercruise.
The first flight is expected in the coming years, with full-scale production targeted in the 2030s.
Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence
This partnership aligns with the Government of India’s vision of self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in critical sectors like defence and aerospace. With a growing focus on indigenous platforms, partnerships like L&T-BEL are seen as vital for building local capabilities, reducing import dependence, and enhancing national security.
