In a significant development signaling upcoming leadership transitions within the Indian Armed Forces, key appointments are set to take place at the highest levels of command.
Lt. Gen. Pratik Sharma is slated to take over as the next General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Udhampur-based Northern Command of the Indian Army. He is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) at Army Headquarters. Lt. Gen. Sharma will succeed Lt. Gen. M. V. Suchindra Kumar, who is scheduled to retire on April 30, 2025.
The Northern Command – one of the Indian Army’s most strategically critical formations—oversees the XIV Corps (Leh), XV Corps (Srinagar), I Corps (Mathura), and XVI Corps (Nagrota). Originally established in 1908 under the British Indian Army, it was disbanded post-Independence and re-raised in 1972. Lt. Gen. Suchindra Kumar has led the command during a crucial phase marked by evolving regional security challenges.
Meanwhile, in the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, currently serving as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command, is set to assume the role of Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC). He will succeed Lt. Gen. Johnson P. Mathew of the Indian Army.
A highly decorated officer, Air Marshal Dixit was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) in 2006 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2011. As the new CISC, he will head the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS)—the apex tri-services body tasked with enhancing operational synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The CISC plays a vital role in India’s defence architecture, ranking just below the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in inter-service coordination.
These high-level appointments reflect India’s ongoing push to enhance jointness, interoperability, and operational readiness across the services, in line with its broader defence modernization objectives.
