In a rare gesture of accountability, Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary Ms. Sujata Saunik (1987-batch IAS officer), Director General of Police (DGP) Mr. Sanjay Kumar Verma (1990-batch IPS officer), and Mumbai Police Commissioner have extended a formal apology to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai following an inadvertent protocol lapse and delay during his arrival at Mumbai International Airport.

This incident occurred during Justice Gavai’s first visit to his home state after assuming the office of the Chief Justice of India. The oversight in protocol arrangements reportedly led to a delay in receiving him at the airport.
While addressing the issue, Justice Gavai remarked, “When a chief of an organ of the Constitution is coming for the first time to the state, and when he too belongs to the said state, whether the treatment they gave was right or not, they themselves should think. I don’t want to go much into small things. But I mentioned it because people should know.”
The apologies from Maharashtra’s top officials reflect the seriousness of the matter, especially considering the high constitutional position held by the Chief Justice. Although Justice Gavai refrained from delving deeper into the issue, his comments have drawn attention to the importance of maintaining protocol and respect for constitutional authorities.
