Patna: In a major step towards revolutionizing the sugarcane industry, Bihar is set to host a state-of-the-art International Research Centre for Sugarcane in Pusa. The initiative, aimed at boosting scientific research, productivity, and sustainable practices in sugarcane cultivation, was officially announced by Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishna Nandan Paswan during a press conference held at Vikas Bhawan Secretariat on Tuesday.
A Centre of Excellence for Sugarcane Farming
The upcoming research institute is envisioned as a hub for both national and international collaboration, focusing on high-yield seed development, disease management, climate-resilient farming techniques, and advanced agro-technology. The centre will serve as a vital resource for sugarcane farmers, researchers, and agri-tech companies across India and abroad.
“This is a new beginning for sugarcane farmers in Bihar,” said Minister Paswan. “We are not only focusing on increasing production but also on making sugarcane farming a globally competitive and profitable enterprise.”
Digital Leap: Online Licensing Portal Launched
Alongside the announcement of the research center, the minister also launched an online licensing portal, developed to streamline services and support for sugarcane farmers. Through this digital platform, farmers can now easily access:
1)Licenses for jaggery units
2)Guidelines for advanced sugarcane cultivation
3)Real-time disease alerts and remedies
4)Fertilizer and irrigation recommendations
5)Cost-reduction techniques and modern equipment use
6)Waste management and organic farming practices
The portal marks a significant step towards paperless, transparent, and efficient governance in the agriculture sector.
Support for R&D and Quality Inputs
The minister emphasized the department’s commitment to providing high-quality seeds and modern farming tools. “This is crucial not only for enhancing yield but also for reducing the input cost,” he noted. “We want our farmers to benefit from innovation, and the new research centre will play a pivotal role in this mission.”
Of Bihar’s 15 sugar mills, eight were non-functional for a long time. These have now been handed over to BIADA (Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority), which is initiating the process of industrial revival by setting up new units.
Empowering Farmers, Attracting Investors
Speaking on the occasion, Departmental Secretary B. Karthikeya Dhanji stated, “The Bihar government is determined to promote sugarcane farming and allied industries. Our digital licensing system ensures farmers and entrepreneurs receive timely and transparent support. We are paving the way for agricultural transformation and inclusive economic development.”
Bihar’s Vision for a Sustainable Agri-Future
With the establishment of the international research centre and the adoption of digital platforms, the Sugarcane Industry Department is taking bold steps toward doubling farmers’ incomes and fostering sustainable growth. These initiatives are expected to not only boost sugarcane production but also position Bihar as a leader in agricultural innovation and rural development.
