New Delhi/Gulmarg: Major General Puneet Doval, SM, has officially taken over as the Commandant of the prestigious High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Gulmarg. The appointment was announced following a ceremonial baton exchange held earlier today, symbolizing the smooth transition of command at one of the world’s most specialized military training institutions.
A Legacy of Excellence in Mountain Warfare Training
Established in 1948 as a ski school and upgraded in 1962 to a Category A Training Establishment, HAWS is globally recognized for its expertise in mountain and winter warfare. The institute plays a pivotal role in preparing soldiers for high-altitude operations, especially in some of the world’s most challenging terrains.
- Mountain Warfare Course (Sonamarg): Conducted from May to October
- Winter Warfare Course (Gulmarg): Held between January and April
Every year, over 10,000 personnel undergo rigorous training at HAWS – empowering Indian troops for operations in extreme regions such as Siachen, Ladakh, and other high-altitude conflict zones.
Strategic Importance Amid Northern Border Tensions
Maj Gen Doval’s appointment comes at a strategically significant time for India. The northern borders continue to witness heightened sensitivity, particularly due to ongoing friction with China. HAWS, with its expertise in sub-zero and high-altitude combat, remains a critical pillar for India’s operational preparedness.
The school also serves as the nodal centre for developing doctrines related to mountain and snow warfare. It houses advanced night-training modules, supports Indian Army ski teams, and regularly trains friendly foreign militaries, further strengthening India’s defence diplomacy.
Maj Gen Puneet Doval: A Leader with Proven Operational Credibility
A decorated officer and Sena Medal awardee, Maj Gen Puneet Doval brings vast operational experience, notably in counter-infiltration operations along the Line of Control (LoC). His appointment reflects the Army’s emphasis on strong leadership at institutions that shape India’s tactical edge.
Lt Gen Devendra Sharma, GOC-in-C ARTRAC, extended his congratulations, expressing full confidence in Maj Gen Doval’s ability to guide HAWS to greater heights. The defence community, including enthusiasts and official pages, has also welcomed the appointment widely across social media platforms.
Looking Ahead
With Maj Gen Doval at the helm, HAWS is expected to further enhance its training rigor, operational doctrines, and joint cooperation with the global mountain warfare community – strengthening India’s readiness in some of the world’s harshest battlefields.
