Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India, alleging that the transfer of IAS and IPS officers from the state was aimed at helping the Bharatiya Janata Party influence the upcoming Assembly elections.
‘Lakshman Rekha’ Warning to BJP and EC
Addressing a rally in Raniganj, Banerjee accused the BJP of “crossing all limits” and warned that there must be a “Lakshman Rekha.”
She alleged that between 50 and 100 officers had been transferred out of West Bengal to other states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu, calling the move politically motivated.

Allegations of ‘Targeted Transfers’ and Destabilisation
Banerjee used sharp rhetoric to accuse the BJP of weakening the state administration by relocating officers familiar with local conditions.
According to her, the transfers were aimed at facilitating the entry of “illicit funds, narcotics, and goons” into the state, and to create conditions for unrest and riots.
She also alleged manipulation of voter lists, warning that such actions undermine democratic norms.
Clashes During Ram Navami Procession Raise Questions
Referring to recent violence during a Ram Navami procession in Raghunathganj, Banerjee questioned the lack of administrative response.
She pointed out that the administration is currently functioning under the Election Commission’s control, distancing her government from responsibility for the clashes.
Banerjee alleged that shops were looted and properties vandalised, and warned that those responsible for inciting violence would not be spared.
Bulldozer Politics and Apology to Affected Residents
The Chief Minister also criticised what she described as “bulldozer politics,” alleging that such actions had taken place in Behala.
She issued an apology to affected residents and assured them that the state government would rebuild damaged shops and properties.
BJP Accused of Hypocrisy Over Corruption
Banerjee accused the BJP of double standards, alleging that it raises funds through illegal coal mining while branding the Trinamool Congress as corrupt.
Emphasis on Communal Harmony
Reiterating West Bengal’s tradition of inclusivity, Banerjee highlighted that people across communities celebrate festivals together—from Durga Puja and Eid to Christmas.
Rehabilitation Package for Landslide-Prone Areas
At the rally, Banerjee also announced a major rehabilitation initiative for residents living in landslide-prone areas of Raniganj.
She said families willing to relocate would receive ₹10 lakh along with two flats, with the government covering relocation costs.
Approximately 2,000 flats have already been constructed, with plans to build 4,000 more.
Relocation to Remain Voluntary
Emphasising that the move would not be forced, Banerjee urged residents to consider relocation for their safety, warning that a major landslide could endanger thousands of lives.
