Shalimar Bagh: In a significant step towards promoting girls’ education and reducing travel barriers, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributed bicycles to 1,100 schoolgirls at the Sarvodaya School in Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh. The initiative aims to ensure that commuting distance no longer hinders education for girls in the capital. The Delhi government has set an ambitious target to provide bicycles to approximately 1.3 lakh girls this year under the program.

Bicycles to Bridge Distance and Promote Education

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that many girls face challenges attending school due to long distances, which sometimes forces them to drop out. “From this year onwards, every girl entering the 9th grade will receive a free bicycle to ease her commute and continue her studies without interruption,” said the CM. She also personally gifted bicycles to students who have reached the 10th grade, encouraging them to learn cycling if they haven’t already. The gesture drew emotional reactions from many girls, with tears of joy visible as they received their bicycles.

Empowering Girls as Future Leaders

Chief Minister Gupta linked the bicycle distribution with the celebration of Navratri and Durga Ashtami, stating, “Daughters are a form of the Goddess, and these festivals are a time to honor them and pledge for their bright future.” She encouraged girls to be confident, independent, and resilient, stressing that they should pursue education fearlessly and embrace their potential fully.

‘Lakhpati Beti’ Scheme to Support Education from Birth to Graduation

Highlighting the government’s broader vision for empowering girls, CM Gupta discussed the recently presented budget, which includes the Lakhpati Beti initiative. Under this scheme, every girl born in Delhi will receive staged financial support from birth to graduation. Funds will be deposited directly into their accounts at key educational milestones – in 1st, 6th, 9th, 12th grades, and during college years – totaling approximately ₹1.25 lakh per girl. This initiative aims to make daughters financially independent and help them achieve their ambitions.

Political Reactions to Bicycle Distribution Scheme

While the initiative received widespread appreciation, it also drew political criticism. Delhi Congress spokesperson Dr. Naresh Kumar described the bicycle distribution program as a “showpiece scheme” and questioned its long-term impact. He argued that the real issues, such as shortages of teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of new schools, remain unresolved. He accused the ruling party of using the scheme to divert attention from these pressing concerns.

Women Empowerment Through ‘Pink Auto’ Scheme

In addition to the bicycle initiative, Chief Minister Gupta announced the Pink Auto Scheme to promote women’s employment. Under this program, 1,000 women will receive auto permits in their names, allowing them to run and operate their vehicles. The CM emphasized that this initiative not only creates livelihood opportunities but also empowers women with dignity and financial independence.

Focus on Health and Safety of Delhi’s Children

The CM also highlighted the government’s health initiatives, including free genetic testing for newborns in Delhi. Every newborn will undergo a blood test screening for 56 types of genetic disorders, completely free of cost. This step aims to identify and address potential health issues early, ensuring better care and long-term well-being.

Direct Interaction with Students Inspires Confidence

During the event, CM Gupta engaged directly with the schoolgirls. Many students shared their aspirations, including one aspiring to become an IAS officer. Others expressed their excitement about receiving bicycles, noting it would make commuting to school easier and more convenient. The CM encouraged all students to pursue their dreams with confidence, reassuring them that the government would support their growth and safety at every step.

Commitment to Girls’ Education and Empowerment

Delhi’s bicycle distribution initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring accessible education, financial support, and empowerment for girls. By addressing both educational and social challenges, the scheme aims to strengthen the future of Delhi’s daughters, providing them with tools, confidence, and opportunities to succeed.
