New Delhi: In a big move, Manoj Kumar Agrawal has been recommended to take over as the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Coal. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) made the announcement following a selection meeting held on June 12, 2025.
Mr Agrawal is currently serving as Director (Technical, P&P) at BCCL and has been instrumental in leading key operational and technical functions in the organisation.
Selected from a Pool of 11 Industry Experts
Mr Agrawal was chosen from a competitive pool of 11 candidates representing major organisations such as South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Indian Railways, Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited (HOCL), and Engineering Projects (India) Limited.
The PESB panel shortlisted Agrawal based on his deep sectoral experience, leadership abilities, and technical acumen.
Professional Journey and Educational Background
Mr Agrawal began his career in the coal sector after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering from the Indian School of Mines (ISM) and later completed an Executive MBA from IIM Ranchi. He also holds a First-Class Manager’s Certificate of Competency, allowing him to manage coal mines independently.
Before joining BCCL, he held key positions at Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), gaining vast experience across mining operations and project execution.
Key Responsibilities at BCCL
In his current role, Agrawal oversees multiple strategic departments including-
- Planning & Projects
- Engineering & Technology (E&T) and IT
- Safety and Rescue Operations
- Geology, Drilling, and Quality Control
- Environment, Civil Engineering, and Industrial Engineering
He also manages the operational functions of Barora, Block-II, Govindpur, Sijua, Katras, and CV Areas – key zones within BCCL’s coal mining landscape.
Next Steps
His recommendation by PESB will now move to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for final approval.
