Senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Manoj Kumar Mohapatra (2000 batch), currently serving as Ambassador of India to Guatemala, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Romania. He is expected to assume the new role shortly, according to an official announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Mohapatra brings with him over two decades of diplomatic experience and a strong background in both bilateral and commercial relations. Prior to his posting in Guatemala (December 2021–present), he served as Minister (Commerce) at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. from July 2019, where he was actively involved in strengthening Indo-U.S. trade relations.
He holds a Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDIBM), a combination reflecting both scientific and administrative acumen.
India-Romania Relation
India and Romania enjoy longstanding diplomatic ties, having established official relations in 1948, which were elevated to the Ambassadorial level in 1968. In 2023, the two nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations, reflecting a steady and evolving partnership in trade, culture, and international cooperation.
Mohapatra’s appointment is expected to further enhance bilateral engagement and strategic cooperation between India and Romania in the coming years.
