New Delhi: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a premier shipbuilding PSU, has formally commenced negotiations with the Indian Navy for the Submarine Project-P75(I). The move follows the central government’s clearance to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and MDL in August 2025, allowing discussions to proceed on this strategic procurement and indigenous manufacturing initiative.
Project Overview and Strategic Importance
The P75(I) project entails the design, build, and delivery of six advanced submarines in India, with technical support from German counterparts, specifically ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Initial discussions for the purchase-cum-manufacturing arrangement began in January 2025. This collaboration aims to strengthen India’s naval capabilities and advance domestic shipbuilding expertise.
Timeline and Commercial Negotiations
MDL expects to finalize the commercial and technical terms of the contract by July 2025, pending MoD approval. The project marks a significant step in India’s pursuit of strategic self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Following the announcement, MDL shares traded in the green, rising 1.04% to Rs 2,783.60 on BSE, reflecting positive investor sentiment.
