Chennai: Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Wednesday expressed hope that more youngsters from Tamil Nadu will clear the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations in the coming years, enabling the state to have greater representation in India’s premier civil services.
Speaking at a felicitation event in Chennai, the Chief Minister congratulated 60 candidates who successfully cleared the IAS and IPS examinations, encouraging them to serve the nation with dedication and integrity.
He also assured that the state government would continue to support civil services aspirants through various initiatives.
Government Initiatives to Improve UPSC Success Rate
Stalin recalled that Tamil Nadu had witnessed relatively low success rates in the UPSC examinations in earlier years. However, he said the government had introduced several initiatives after assuming office in 2021 to help more aspirants succeed in the prestigious national-level examination.
One of the key initiatives highlighted by the Chief Minister was the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, launched by the Tamil Nadu government to provide guidance and training to students preparing for competitive examinations.
According to him, 56 candidates who underwent training under the Naan Mudhalvan programme cleared the UPSC examination this year, reflecting the positive impact of the scheme.
Aspiration for Greater Representation in Civil Services
Stressing the importance of increased representation from the state in national administration, Stalin said that the number of successful candidates from Tamil Nadu should continue to grow.
He expressed hope that more youngsters from the state would become district collectors and departmental secretaries across the country, contributing to governance, development, and welfare initiatives.
He also highlighted that civil servants play a crucial role in serving marginalised communities and ensuring effective implementation of government policies.
Civil Servants as India’s Global Representatives
The Chief Minister noted that civil servants not only contribute to governance within the country but also have opportunities to represent India internationally.
He said officers in the civil services may serve as diplomats and ambassadors, strengthening India’s diplomatic ties and international partnerships.
Such roles, he said, demonstrate the broad scope of the civil services and their importance in shaping the country’s global engagement.
Advice to Successful Candidates
Addressing the newly selected candidates, Stalin emphasised the importance of humanity, humility and a service-oriented attitude while dealing with the public.
He pointed out that civil servants have the opportunity to serve society for more than three decades, which allows them to make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
In contrast, he said politicians must face elections every five years, making the role of civil servants particularly important in ensuring continuity and stability in governance.
Personal Advice: Stay Connected with Family
Sharing a personal message with the successful candidates, Stalin advised them to stay connected with their families despite the demands of their careers.
“You should care about your home and parents. Speak to them at least for five minutes every day to enquire about their health. This concern will help your career grow. Your dream has been fulfilled. Now let you begin fulfilling the dreams of the people,” he said.
Senior Leaders Attend the Event
The felicitation ceremony was attended by several senior leaders and officials, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, along with ministers P. K. Sekarbabu and Kayalvizhi Selvaraj.
Also present at the event was N. Muruganandam, Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, along with other officials and dignitaries.
The event celebrated the achievements of the successful candidates while reinforcing the state government’s commitment to encouraging more youth to join India’s civil services in the coming years.
