New Delhi/Vemagal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to virtually inaugurate the H125 Light Utility Helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) on February 17, 2026, marking a major milestone in Indo-French aerospace collaboration.
The facility, located in Vemagal in Karnataka’s Kolar district near Bengaluru, is a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus Helicopters.
India’s First Private-Sector Helicopter Final Assembly Line
The Vemagal plant is India’s first private-sector helicopter final assembly line, effectively ending the long-standing monopoly of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in helicopter manufacturing.
Spread across approximately 740,000 square feet in the Vemagal Industrial Area (Sahajaanand Industrial Park), the facility will include:
- Manufacturing operations
- Final assembly
- Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services
The plant is expected to generate over 450 direct and indirect jobs, strengthening Karnataka’s position as a key aerospace hub.

Production Timeline and Capacity
The first “Made in India” H125 helicopters are expected to roll out by early 2027.
Initial capacity: Around 10 helicopters per year
- Scalable production: Plans to increase output as domestic and export demand grows
- Long-term potential: Production capacity could rise significantly, with ambitions for exports to Southeast Asia and Africa
- The project is aligned with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, focusing on defence indigenisation and technology transfer.
- The H125 Helicopter: Capabilities and Versatility
The Airbus H125 is the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopter, renowned for its high-altitude performance and versatility.
Key Features:
- Seating capacity: Up to six persons
- Range: Approximately 630 km
- High-altitude capability: The only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest
Roles and Missions:
- Air ambulance services
- Firefighting
- Law enforcement
- Tourism
- Disaster relief
- High-altitude military operations
While the facility will initially produce civil variants, there are plans to manufacture a military version, the H125M, featuring higher levels of indigenous technology.
Strategic and Defence Significance
The assembly line strengthens India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and reduces dependency on imports. It also supports the Indian armed forces’ requirement for light utility helicopters, particularly for operations in border and high-altitude areas.
The initiative comes amid expanding Indo-French defence ties, which have deepened significantly since 2016 with major acquisitions including Rafale fighter jets and Scorpene-class submarines.
France remains India’s largest defence partner in Europe, with defence deals worth over €13 billion in the past decade.
Expanding Indo-French Aerospace Collaboration
The TASL-Airbus partnership builds upon existing collaborations, including:
- Assembly of C295 aircraft in Vadodara
- Technology transfer initiatives under India’s offset policy
- The inauguration signals high-level political commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and France.
Airbus has committed to technology transfer and local supply chain development, contributing to India’s long-term aerospace capabilities.
Economic and Geopolitical Impact
The Vemagal facility enhances Karnataka’s status as a global aerospace manufacturing destination, joining established operations by Boeing and HAL in the region.
Geopolitically, the move reinforces India’s strategic positioning in the Indo-Pacific, complementing France’s regional strategy and strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.
The project also aligns with India’s growing defence export ambitions. Defence exports rose significantly in FY25, with helicopters expected to play a pivotal role in future growth.
Sustainable and Future-Ready Facility
The Vemagal plant adheres to green manufacturing standards, incorporating solar energy and sustainable production practices in line with global aerospace norms.
Future expansions may include:
- Armed variants of the H125
- Expanded MRO capabilities
- Export-oriented production lines
- A Milestone for ‘Make in India’
The inauguration of the H125 Final Assembly Line represents a transformative step in India’s aerospace journey — blending French technology with Indian manufacturing expertise to build globally competitive capabilities.
It also reflects the evolving chemistry between Prime Minister Modi and President Macron, underscoring a new chapter in Indo-French defence and industrial cooperation.
